Distant thunder echoes

Distant thunder echoes off the canyon wall
The river-forge responsible has since gone dry
A deep canal remains to mark its passage here
Echoes small within the larger framework lie

Dark’ning clouds now render us a false midnight
Lightning cracks like hammer on the anvil steel
Streaks of energy cut through the ashen sky
Twinkling granite veins their flashes do reveal

Thunder echoes off the canyon wall
Water pours from heav’n to fuel the forge
Tempest hammer-strikes reshape the earth
And altogether craft anew the gorge

But when the future views the setting here
Who will let them know it’s history
Forged by river long and lightning brief
The aftermath is all that they will see

But time was never kind to me
With her my deeds forever sleep
My mistress of the great divide
Divulging secrets I would keep
