Ancient Castles

If ancient castles realized in sand
are built with sturdy care yet made to end,
this coarse and roughened sediment
can then reflect a fleeting sentiment:

Love oft is built with giddy hope to last,
but finds it’s fated oft to ruin fast.

Is that then to be love defin’d,
or just deceiving lust disguised?
And if love it is resolvéd to be,
is there diminishment with brevity?

Lust desires after things forever more,
but love will be content to have its time,
and independent from a false rapport,
import relies not on longevity.

As ancient castles crumble into sand,
so love is built with destiny to end.
